A Nyack Indian Chief?This is an accounting of a "Nayack" Indian chief in 1664. "The History of Ulster County Under the Dominion of the Dutch." by Augustus H. van Buren, published in 1923.  Scroll to chapter Ch VII, to paragraph beginning with "On May 15, 1664", to read about "Matteno of the Staten Island and Nayack"  Or read the whole page...very interesting!

Chiefs And listed here, again, in another document spelled somewhat differently "Matteveno"  

Personal Names of Indians of New Jersey   Not only does this book list  "Mattano" chief of the Staten Island and Nayack SAVAGES", but it also lists his brother, "Neckaocb" and brother-in-law "Encheim." This list of 650 names,( mostly from Indian deeds of the seventeenth century),  was gathered by William Nelson and published by the Paterson History Club in 1904. 

A Bowl from the Nyack Indians!  In this document, where "Ramapo Mountain Indians" are denied federal recognition, they note a bowl that had been "purchased from the Indians at Upper Nyack in 1822." (after clicking link, go to page 14 of this document)

US Commission on Civil Rights statement  T Although the Commission, which has no powers to create law, claims  in this statement, that the "Commission deeply respects the rights of all Americans to freedom of expression under the First Amendment and in no way would attempt to prescribe how people can express themselves. National Coalition Against Censorship  In this article about  routine censorship of literary passages on NY State language arts regents exams, the National Coalition Against Censorship ( and at least FIFTEEN other organizations) are also concerned about  "WHETHER SIMILAR FORMS OF CENSORSHIP IN THE NAME OF "SENSITIVITY" HAVE INFILTRATED THE CURRICULUM OR CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES..."   What about censoring Indian images?

Educational Insensitivity     Read what Diane Ravitch, Research Professor of Educational History at NYU has to say about censorship in the educational publishing industry. She states, "Once reviewers proposed to eliminate a reading passage about Mount Rushmore because the monument offends Lakota Indians..."

NY State Department of Education "Sensitivity Guidelines for discussing Native Americans."  OPEN AND GO TO PAGE 7 These sensitivity guidelines are provided for teachers by the NYS Department of Education. The guideline states "don't lump ALL INDIANS (emphasis ours) together...", yet isn't that what was done in order to claim ALL INDIANS were offended by Indian names and images?

School Boards, What and Why?   What stands out  in this article, from the American School Board Journal , is that they see the job of the school board members as "providing leadership and REPRESENTING THE COMMUNITY'S INTERESTS..."

National Review Online    In this interview with NRO, Diane Ravitch discusses the process of self-censorship and states "they call it "sensitivity" and "fairness" review without realizing they are censoring to placate pressure groups, or in anticipation of protests."  Sounds similar to the censorship of our Nyack Indian image.

Kennewick Man  An interesting interview with scientist, James Chatters, who was responsible for examining the bones of this 9,300 year old skeleton.  He found that Kennewick man..." lacks definitive characteristics of the classic mongoloid stock to which modern Native Americans belong."  His findings challenge the theory that American Indians were the first people of America.

THE OFFICIAL SITE OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN NATIONAL TEAM   Their web address is awarriorssoul.com...wonder what that means?

AIHEC.org   American Indian Higher Education Consortium (This American Indian Educational Organization, founded by the "six tribal colleges", chose to use the term "Indian" and also chose an Indian image as their logo ( feathers  in the UP position!) So how is it that our educational organization is telling us that Indian names and images are demeaning and offensive?

Native American Sports Council     No denying their pride in the "warrior image"

American Indian Warriors Association  The mission of these Indian warriors is to contribute to the positive image of American Indian Tribal heritage. The logo on their "warrior cloth patch" is an Indian in  full headdress back to back with an American soldier.

NDN Sports  This Native American Indian website keeps track of Indian athletes and teams: What are some of their team names? Why....Indians, Warriors, Chiefs, Lady Indians, Lady Braves,...of course!

North American Indigenous Games  "The Spirit: Strong, Brave, True" .."In the spirit of the Sports Warrior." (just like Nyack) This website uses many Indian images and even performs game opening ceremonies with Indians dressed in full regalia. No problem with Indian image pride here!

Native American Indian Hockey Player refuses to be PC

Haskell Indian Nation Athletics     Home of the "fighting Indians."  This American Indian College doesn't seem to find this Indian image demeaning!

United Tribes Technical College    They have no problem using feathers in their logo.

Pascack Valley High School: Although not an American Indian school, there's no denying their pride! Their rivals are the Pascack Hills Cowboys.

SHS Home Page:    This American Indian school, Shiprock High School in New Mexico, is  proud of their "Chieftains",  perhaps they can help teach our school board how to be proud of the Nyack Indians!
